Don’t lose heart. Your God is victorious.
One of my favorite verses is in Isaiah 50:7 — “Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.”
I love it because for a long time, I thought that facing opposition meant I was in the wrong spot. I thought it meant that perhaps I had taken a wrong turn or committed some sin of which I was unaware. I thought that if I served a victorious God and wasn’t feeling victorious, something must be wrong.
This theology works fine when things are going well, but when the bottom falls out and you’re up against a wall, you need something more to hold. That spot is where a lot of us let go and get discouraged and feel forgotten. But it’s also the spot where a lot of us meet Jesus and where Jesus meets us. For the Christian life is not about smooth sailing. It’s about knowing where we’re going. It’s about an eternal perspective — and with that perspective, we know that God is victorious. So we can press through to the other side, to the next challenge. We are empowered with the Holy Spirit to determine our hearts and minds when all seems against us.
Opposition doesn’t always mean you’re in the wrong spot. Sometimes, it means you’re right where you are supposed to be. Don’t lose heart. Your God is victorious. Set your face like a stone, and keep going.
